SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Kenya-based Magadi Soda has started selling soda ash produced from its new 350,000 tonne/year plant to Indian buyers, said a company source on Wednesday.

India’s requirements for soda ash are still strong and we have always been supplying to that market,” said the source.

The Kenyan maker doubled the operating rate of the plant this year to cater to Asia, but kept the capacity below 100% given poor demand.

The plant was serving term customers in the Middle East and Africa when it was operating at 40% in the second half of 2008, added the source.

Magadi operates another 350,000tonne/year facility at the same site in southern Kenya.

The company was acquired by India’s Tata Chemicals in December 2005.
