MOSCOW (ICIS news)--Russia's Silvinit anticipates lower potash production in the first quarter compared with last year but expects markets to pick up again in the second quarter, the company said on Wednesday.

In the first quarter of 2009, the company expects potash production to be reduced by 500,000 to 1m tonnes year on year, Silvinit CEO Rostam Sabirov said in a statement.

"We anticipate revival of the global potash markets in the second quarter this year," he said.

Silvinit, Russia's major potash producer based in Berezniki, Perm region in the Urals, produced 5.1m tonnes of potash in 2008, according to the statement.
