HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Militants attacked a tanker ship carrying diesel off the coast of Nigeria, according to news reports on Wednesday.

Gunmen in speedboats used dynamite to attack the 6,150-dwt vessel MT Meredith, loaded with 4,000 tonnes of diesel, and kidnapped a Romanian crew member, a Reuters report said.

The tanker was travelling from Lagos to the main oil city of Port Harcourt, a military spokesman said. Reuters quoted an unnamed security source who said the ship's engine and superstructure were seriously damaged, crippling the vessel, and that the Nigerian navy was on the scene.
