SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--South Korea-based GS Caltex plans to shut its 180,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) plant in Yeosu in mid-February for maintenance, a company source said on Thursday.

"It’s a regular turnaround and the plant should resume production in early March," the source said.

The producer exports around 15% of its output to its subsidiary compounding plant GS Caltex Langfang in Hebei province in China, he said.

"GS Caltex Langfang caters mainly to the automotive and home appliance application sectors, and its business has been affected by the global economic downturn," he added.

GS Caltex is one of the major refinery operators in South Korea besides SK Energy and S-Oil.

Other PP producers in South Korea are Honam Petrochemical, Samsung Total Petrochemical and Polymirae.
