TOKYO (ICIS news)--Japan produced a total of 501,300 tonnes of ethylene in January, down 1.5% from the previous month, as ethylene producers reduced operating rates, statistics from the government showed on Tuesday.

Ethylene production was down 21.8% from January 2008, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) said.

No crackers were shut in January 2008 or 2009, or in December 2008, METI said.

Japanese refiner Idemitsu Kosan trimmed operating rates at two crackers to 70-75% in January, down from 75-80% in November-December last year, due to weak demand for polyolefins.
