HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US exports of ethyl acetate (etac) in 2008 totalled 68,562 tonnes, up 39% from 49,160 tonnes in 2007, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Wednesday.

December 2008 etac exports totalled 7,319 tonnes, more than double the 3,489 tonnes sent out during the same month of 2007, according to the ITC data.

The increase reflects etac's small niche market in the adhesives and inks and coatings sectors, which have not been stung as much by recessionary pressures as other segments.

Mexico, Spain and Belgium were the top US etac export destinations in 2008, accounting for a collective 37,351 tonnes, or 54% of total shipments, the ITC said.

December exports rose 37% over 5,361 tonnes in November 2008, according to the data.

US Gulf coast export FOB (free on board) prices were $1,102-1,190/tonne (€860-928/tonne) over the past month, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.

Major US etac producers include Celanese, Eastman Chemical and Solutia, whose material is marketed now by Celanese.
