Russia's Sibur pursues major gas processing project

MOSCOW (ICIS news)--Russia's Sibur Holding has moved ahead with its gas processing expansion despite adverse economic conditions, the petrochemical company said on Monday.

Sibur had started the second stage of its Yuzhno-Balyk project, which would double the plant's capacity to 3bn cbm/year of associated gas by the third quarter of 2009, it said in a statement.

The first stage of the plant's expansion, which raised its capacity from 900m cbm/year to 1.5bn cbm/year, was completed in 2007-2008, according to the statement.

Sibur was continuing with the implementation of investment projects designed to improve gas processing and limit the burning of associated gas, Sibur CEO Dimitry Konov said in the statement.

On 8 January 2009 Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin signed a decree stipulating that from 2012, oil companies would be allowed to burn no more than 5% of their total associated gas production.
