US Huntsman unveils glycerine-based carbonate

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US specialty-chemical maker Huntsman will sell a bio-based solvent and reactive intermediate made from glycerine, the company said on Tuesday.

Huntsman touted the product, JEFFSOL Glycerine Carbonate, as an environmentally-friendly alternative to methylene chloride, acetone, aromatic solvents and other highly volatile and hazardous solvents. Glycerine is a co-product of biodiesel refining.

JEFFSOL can also be polymerised or reacted with isocyanates or acrylates and used in coatings, adhesives and lubricants, the company said.

“This new product offers formulators the ability to produce value-added products with renewable content and addresses a real need in the marketplace for a functional, cost effective, renewable intermediate,” said Stu Monteith, vice president of Huntsman’s performance specialties segment.
