HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US refined glycerine imports in January were 8,361 tonnes, or 9% higher than the 7,700 tonnes shipped during the same month the year before, the US International Trade Commission (USITC) said on Friday.
Imports in the month were 41% more than the 5,910 tonnes shipped in December 2008. Malaysia supplied 5,839 tonnes in January, up 50% from the same period the year before. Imports from Germany fell by 33%, to 1,138 tonnes, and those from Indonesia by 56%, to 601 tonnes.
In January, US customers took advantage of an oversupply of glycerine in southeast Asia to purchase material at prices lower than for domestic glycerine.
Global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing assessed vegetable glycerine spot prices at $816-992/tonne (€636/tonne) and tallow-derived glycerine at $772-992/tonne on 13 March, compared with $728-992/tonne for both on 28 January.
US glcyerine producers include Dial, P&G, Uniqema, ADM and Cargill.
