HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US maleic anhydride (MA) exports were 2.664m kg in January, 14% more than January 2008 when exports were 2.335m kg, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Friday.

More than half of US MA exports were destined for Mexico, which took 1.879m kg, or 58% more material in January 2009 compared with the same time period in 2008.

MA exports to Canada fell by 48% in January.

On the import front, foreign MA volumes coming into the US plummeted from 1.503m kg to 818,773 kg, or 46%, year-over-year in January.

MA from Belgium decreased by 63% to 264,400 kg in January while Canadian imports were 192,551 kg in the same time period, a drop of 46% from a year earlier.

The major MA producers in the US are Huntsman, Lanxess, Marathon, and Flint Hills Resources (FHR). Bartek sells MA from Canada and Idesa is a producer in Mexico.
