NOVA Chemicals to cut US EPS capacity

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--NOVA Chemicals plans to cut expandable polystyrene (EPS) capacity by 90m lbs/year (40,824 tonnes/year) as part of a plan to improve product line and reduce costs, the Canada-based producer said on Friday.

The move will affect plants in Monaca, Pennsylvania and Painesville, Ohio, NOVA said.

The plan reduces capacity at the Monaca site to 180m lbs/year from 285m lbs/year and increases operating capacity at Painesville to 100m lbs/year from 85m lbs/year, NOVA said.

“Streamlining our EPS business allows us to supply customers with more cost-competitive, best performing products focused on higher product performance, quality and consistency," said Robert Snyder, vice president of performance styrenics.

NOVA’s updated product line includes 10 resin grades for cup and container, protective packaging and construction applications like insulation, geo-foam and insulated concrete forms, NOVA said.
