HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association (SOCMA) said on Wednesday it would change its name to the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates to better represent its growing membership.
All categories of membership in the trade group will now be offered to companies in batch, custom and specialty chemicals, to extend its reach beyond businesses with interests in the synthetic organic chemical industry.
"This is the first time in our 88-year long history that SOCMA has changed its name," said SOCMA board chairman Charlie Hinnant.
"By formally reflecting the sector of the industry we've successfully represented for many years already, we can better help the industry and the public at large understand what our organization and members are all about."
The name change and membership initiatives were approved by SOCMA's board of governors on 19 March, the group said in a statement.
