TORONTO (ICIS news)--The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) on Friday published an updated list of pre-registered substances under the EU’s Reach regulation.

The list, available on the agency’s website, contains around 143,000 substances which were pre-registered by 65,000 companies between 1 June and 1 December 2008, it said.

The Helsinki-based agency did not expect that all the substances on the pre-registered list required registration, it said.

Compared with an earlier version published on 19 December that contained about 150,000 substances, the new list offered some improvements, ECHA said.

These included CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) numbers for some substances that were previously identified only by chemical name, as well as improved search functions for the list, the agency said.

ECHA noted that the list was made up of pre-registrations submitted by industry.

“In ECHA’s opinion the list contains many preparations and substances that did not require registration,” it said.
