HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US ethanol production in January was 821m gal (3.1bn litres), a 24% increase from 664m gal one year earlier, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Wednesday.

However, ethanol production in January was down by 4% from 854m gal in December 2008, according to EIA figures.

US ethanol production in 2008 totalled 9.2bn gal, a 42% increase from 6.5bn gal in 2007, based on government data.

US ethanol production has been rising sharply since 2006 due to ramped-up capacity that began in 2006 with the methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) phase-out and the inclusion of ethanol in the US motor fuel market.

The US is the world’s top producer of ethanol followed by Brazil, where production last year rose by about 20% to 25bn litres.
