Bayer CropScience defends patent rights in China

TORONTO (ICIS news)--Bayer CropScience has won a court order in China protecting patents for its crop protection additive Mefenpyr, the Germany-based producer said on Friday.

A court in Wuxi ordered Chinese firm Jiangsu Tian Rong Group to stop selling Mefenpyr in infringement of Bayer’s patent rights and to pay compensation, it said.

“The court’s decision sends a strong signal to Chinese companies, warning them against patent infringements of this kind,” Ralf-Ruediger Jesse, head of patents and licensing at Bayer CropScience, said.

“This case shows our commitment to defending our patents worldwide and to preventing the illegal trade of crop protection products,” he added.

Bayer had filed the case in April 2008.

Mefenpyr is a “safener” which is added to herbicides to accelerate their degradation and prevent damage to the plants.
