The price announcement followed suit from Southern Chemical Corp (SCC), which also designated 60 cents/gal as its North American May contract price.
According to Methanex, low worldwide demand for methanol, a key component for several chemicals, has stabilised its contract pricing over the past several months.
In its first-quarter conference call, Methanex said that the price outlook for methanol ultimately depends on industrial operating rates, global energy prices, the rate of industry restructuring and the strength of global demand.
