Taiwan's Ming Dih may delay EPS unit restart on weak demand

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Taiwan’s Ming Dih Group may not restart its 166,000 tonne/year expandable polystyrene (EPS) unit when maintenance has been completed this week due to uncertain demand after the May holidays, said a company source on Thursday.

Most of Asia will be on a short work-week, with Labor Day falling on a Friday this week, while Japan's Golden Week holidays extend up to next Wednesday.

The unit in Kaohsiung was taken off line on 18 April for a turnaround.

The company also operates a 100,000 tonne/year unit at Zhongshan in southern China, and a 30,000 tonne/year unit in Bangkok, Thailand.

Other Taiwanese EPS producers include the Loyal Group, Taita Chemicals and Dearman Chi-Meng.
