EU wants nine chemicals added to Stockholm Convention list

BRUSSELS (ICIS news)--The EU will call for nine chemicals to be added to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants’ list of dangerous substances due to be phased out globally, the European Commission announced on Thursday.

EU representatives will argue that commercial pentabromodiphenyl ether, commercial octabromodiphenyl ether, chlordecone, hexabromobiphenyl, alpha hexachlorocyclohexane, beta hexachlorocyclohexane, lindane, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride and pentachlorobenzene should be added to the list during a meeting on 4-8 May.

If successful, it will be the first time since the adoption of the Convention in 2001 that new substances have been added to the list.
