SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Al-Waha Petrochemical Co is in the process of starting up its new polypropylene (PP) plant and propane de-hydrogenation (PDH) unit at Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia, a source close to the company said on Tuesday.

"The PP plant will initially be running at 40-50% operating rate, but will gradually be ramped up to 100%," the source said. The process would be completed by 6 May, he added.

The 450,000 tonne/year plant will produce only homopolymer PP in the first couple of months but the output will eventually be diversified to include copolymer PP grades, the source added.

Propylene feedstock for the PP plant will be sourced from the 450,000 tonne/year PDH unit.

The PP plant will use LyondelBasell’s Sperizone process.

Al-Waha Petrochemical is a joint venture between Sahara Petrochemical Co and LyondellBasell.
