GUANGZHOU, CHINA (ICIS news)--Eastern Petrochemical Co (Sharq) is expected to start supplying high density polyethylene (HDPE) to the China market from its new 400,000 tonne/year plant at Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia, early next year, a source close to the company said on Tuesday.

“If everything goes as planned, the material should hit the market in large volumes early next year,” said the source, who was speaking on the sidelines of the Chinaplas 2009 exhibition in Guangzhou.

The producer has been selling small volumes of HDPE to China as part of its pre-marketing efforts for the new plant, he said.

ICIS news had earlier reported that the new HDPE plant, as well as a new 400,000 tonne/year linear low density PE (LLDPE) plant and a new ethane cracker, was due to start up at the same site in the second half of this year.

Sharq is a 50:50 joint venture between SABIC and Saudi Petrochemical Development Corp (SPDC), which is a Japanese consortium led by the Mitsubishi Group.
