HOUSTON (ICIS news)--A US sewage-treatment-systems company is using chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) pipes on offshore platforms because it best resists corrosion in the ocean environment, the company said on Wednesday.
A spokesman for Houston-based Severn Trent De Nora said it has begun using CPVC pipes at offshore platforms in the Middle East in place of metal pipes, which were known to corrode in salty ocean air and seawater.
“For maximum effectiveness, the system needs to rely on piping that stands up to the harsh, corrosive demands of the offshore environment. Metallic piping too frequently fails,” the spokesman said.
CPVC is made from PVC in a process that increases the chlorine content of the plastic. The spokesman said Severn Trent De Nora tested several pipe materials including fibreglass and lined metallic plumbing, but CPVC performed the best.
The company said it used Corzan CPVC developed by Scranton, Pennsylvania-based Vycom/Scranton Products.
