HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US phenol exports in April fell by 56% to 21,429 tonnes from the same month a year before, according to data released on Wednesday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

However, phenol exports in April rose by 65% from March, the ITC said

The US exported 61,053 tonnes of phenol from January though April, down 67% from 183,322 tonnes moved during the same quarter in 2008, the ITC said.

Phenol demand has been at an all-time low in the US because most of its downstream demand is tied to the struggling US automotive and housing sectors.

In recent weeks, buyers and sellers have said that demand has recovered slightly from earlier this year, but is still not near one-year-ago levels.

US phenol spot prices are in the high 30s cents/lb range (around $840/tonne, €596/tonne) free on board (FOB), according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
