DENVER, Colorado (ICIS news)--US ethanol capacity is nearly 24% above demand for the biofuel, a scenario that will persist for quite some time, a consultant said on Tuesday.
“US capacity is at around 13bn gal/year (49bn litres/year), and demand is at 10.5bn gal,” said Logan Caldwell, managing director at Houston Biofuels Consultants.
Caldwell said the capacity figure did not take into account the several shutdowns in the industry in recent months.
Industry participants have estimated that more than 2.5bn gal/year of US ethanol production is off line due to the weak economy and its impact on motor-fuel demand.
The conference will end on Thursday.
