XIAMEN (ICIS news)--Belgium-based producer Solvay plans to complete the construction of its new 100,000 tonne/year epichlorohydrin (ECH) plant in Mab Ta Phut, Thailand, in the second quarter of 2011, company officials said on Thursday.

The plant would use refined glycerine as the feedstock, regional sales and marketing manager of Solvay Biochemicals (Thailand), Hellen Pham, said on the sidelines of the 2009 Epoxy Resins & Raw Materials forum.

"We will use technical grade refined glycerine from either biodiesel or oleochemical production," she said.

The growth of regional glycerine production from the planned start-ups of new biodiesel/oleochemical capacities in Asia would also ensure that the company would not lack raw material in the future, added Arnaud Valenduc, managing director of the company.

Thailand gave approval to Solvay’s application to build the $184m (€132.5m) chemical plant in February 2008.

One unit of glycerine is manufactured as a by-product for every 10 units of soap, biodiesel and oleochemicals. Glycerine has a variety of applications in food, cosmetics, personal care and manufacturing industries.

ECH is used as an intermediate in epoxy resin production, and can also be produced from propylene.

The three-day Epoxy Resins & Raw Materials conference being held in Xiamen, Fujian province, China, will end on 19 June.
