"The difference is night and day," said Robert Martino, a public-relations representative for NPE.
In addition to bioplastics, the show will include exhibits for additives designed specially for the material, Martino said.
The show is held once every three years and is expected to draw at least 75,000 people.
Other exhibits will feature energy conservation, a long-time trend for NPE, Martino said. "There are very, very many machinery suppliers that are featuring machines that use less electricity."
Another topic related to energy, photovoltaics, will also be featured at the show, Martino said.
Weight reduction will be another prominent trend at the show, he said.
Over the years, companies have gradually reduced the weight of plastics used in packaging and other applications, Martino said. Even small reductions can add up in terms of shipping costs.
Weight reduction also will feature prominently among automobile exhibits, he said. Some booths will feature resins that can replace glass.
Other exhibits will feature construction materials meant to comply with energy conservation standards, he said.
NPE organisers expect attendance to drop compared with previous years - a trend consistent with most trade shows, Martino said.
However, those that do attend will likely be company employees that make important decisions on purchasing, new projects and other items, Martino said.
Despite the downturn, exhibitor figures remained stable despite the downturn, Martino said. Exhibitors number roughly 1,600, and floor space will likely cover 900,000 square feet (83,700 square metres).
Martino attributed the stable figures to the nature of the NPE show. "There are some things you cannot afford to miss," he said.
Not only is NPE the largest plastics show in North America, it is only held once every three years.
"If you miss this one, you have to wait three years," Martino said.
NPE lasts through 26 June.
