CHICAGO (ICIS news)--Public awareness campaigns have driven recycling and sustainability practices to the forefront at the 2009 International Plastics Showcase that kicked off today in Chicago, attendees said on Monday.
Participants at this year's event cited a notable increase in the attention paid to recycled resin and processing markets compared with 2006.
"Recycling is much bigger this year," said Alain Nassy, senior sales engineer for equipment manufacturer AGR International.
"'Green marketing has gained momentum and increased public concern over recycling. But more importantly, companies have started feeling the impact of bad PR from not recycling," he said, adding that the trend extends beyond plastics into aluminum and glass.
Whether it is Coca-Cola putting millions into state-of-the-art polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling facilities, or beer manufacturers extending the lightweighting trend into glass bottle markets, a shift toward recycling appears evident within the packaging industry, sources said.
