Mitsui Chemicals subsidiary starts new PP unit in India

TOKYO (ICIS news)--Mitsui Prime Advanced Composites India started commercial production and business operations at its 15,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) compounding unit at Rajasthan, India, in June, parent company Mitsui Chemicals said in a statement on Wednesday.

The company is Mitsui Chemicals’ first-ever business in India, and it will manufacture products for automotive applications, it said.

While global automobile sales temporarily declined sharply, triggered by the worldwide financial crisis in the latter half of 2008, sales were recovering in India and China, Mitsui Chemicals said.

Car makers, particularly in India, have been increasing their production capacities, as the automobile market was expected to continue to grow at a rate of around 10%, Mitsui Chemicals said.

As a result, there was demand for a new manufacturing base for PP used in automotive materials, Mitsui Chemicals said.

With the start-up of its new PP unit, Mitsui Chemicals now has six PP manufacturing bases for automotive materials across the globe, including in Japan and China.

Mitsui Chemicals’ PP business is operated by its Prime Polymer subsidiary, which is a 65:35 joint venture with Japanese refiner Idemitsu Kosan.
