Croda to close UK plant at Wilton in 2010, 125 jobs affected

TORONTO (ICIS news)--Croda expects to close production at its site in Wilton, UK, in the first half of 2010, affecting 125 jobs, a spokesman for the international specialty chemicals producer said on Wednesday, confirming media reports.

The move would come in the wake of the planned closure by a key raw material supplier at Wilton, Croda spokesman Charlie Armitstead told ICIS news.

Dow Chemical’s plan, announced earlier on Wednesday, to stop production of ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol (EO/EG) at Wilton would make Croda’s operations there unsustainable as Croda was heavily relying on EO as a core feedstock, he said.

Dow was the only producer of EO in the UK, he added.

The exact number of job losses would be determined after consultations with workers, Armitstead said.

Croda would supply customers from other plants in Europe where EO was more accessible, he said.

“We are not expecting any significant disruptions at all.”
