China’s BOPP film demand growth to slow in 2009 – CPPIA

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--China’s demand for biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film is expected to slow this year due to the global economic crunch, an official from the China Plastics Processing Industry Association  (CPPIA) said on Wednesday.

“It’s difficult to tell the exact growth rate now, but we’ll expect growth to be slower at 5-10% due to the global downturn,” the official said in Mandarin.

BOPP demand growth in China was estimated at around 15% in 2008, he said.

China’s BOPP film sector is export-oriented that lower demand from the US and Europe had adversely affected the sector, he said.

Demand for Chinese BOPP film, including domestic and export markets, was around 2m tonnes this year, he added.

China’s BOPP film processing capacity was estimated at 2.32m tonnes last year and more than 700,000 tonnes of new capacity was expected to be added this year, according to CPPIA data.
