Germany’s Dormagen chem site to get new power plant

TORONTO (ICIS news)--German power supply firm GWE plans to go ahead with a €80m ($113m) waste-fed co-generation powerplant at the chemicals production site in Dormagen in North Rhine-Westphalia state, the company said on Friday.

Construction was expected to begin in 2010, with completion in 2013, GWE spokeswoman Kerstin Osygus told ICIS news.

The facility would supply steam to the chemical producers at Dormagen.

The electricity generated by the plant would go to the public grid, but may also be provided to chemical firms at Dormagen, Osygus said without disclosing planned capacity levels. 

Chemical companies operating in Dormagen include Bayer, INEOS, Lanxess, Saltigo and Yara.

Osygus said the waste for the plant would be sourced from within the region. Local media, citing environmentalists, had reported the waste for the project could be imported.

Germany’s chemicals producers have repeatedly stressed the importance of reliable and affordable energy supplies to ensure the industry’s competitiveness.
