India orders arrest of Union Carbide head during Bhopal spill

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--An India court issued an arrest warrant for the former chairman of US Union Carbide, whose plant’s 1984 chemical spill killed thousands in Bhopal, India, news reports said on Friday.

Warren Anderson and Union Carbide, which was acquired by Dow Chemical in 2001, were charged with culpable homicide, grievous assault and other crimes related to the disaster.

Dow did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Anderson was arrested in the aftermath of the spill, but soon left the country and the government has since said that it did not know his location, reports said.

However, television reports have recently indicated that he was in New York, and the Indian government is expected to press the US for his extradition, according to reports.

In 1989, Union Carbide paid $470m (€334m) in compensation to India’s government, which Dow has said resolved the legal case.
