TORONTO (ICIS news)--Shell has awarded Technip a contract to integrate two of its refineries near Cologne in Germany to create that country’s largest refining complex, the Paris-based petrochemicals engineering firm said on Tuesday.

Technip’s contract included engineering, procurement and construction work to connect Shell’s refineries in Cologne-Godorf and Wesseling, it said.

As part of the work, Shell planned to modify process units and construct new facilities to produce more low sulphur gas oil, Technip said without disclosing capacities or financial terms.

Shell’s refinery at Godorf has a processing capacity of 10m tonnes/year, according to Shell’s German website.

The refinery in Wesseling has a capacity of 7m tonnes/year. In addition to fuels, it produces aromatics, olefins and methanol.

In a related development, Shell is seeking to sell two of its refineries near Hamburg.

Germany’s largest single refinery is Mineraloelraffinerie Oberrhein (MIRO) near Karlsruhe with a processing capacity of 15.5m tonnes/year. MIRO’s stakeholders include ConocoPhillips, Esso, Ruhr Oel and Shell.
