Two INEOS' synthetic ethanol plants running at reduced rate

LONDON (ICIS news)--INEOS’ two synthetic ethanol units at Grangemouth, Scotland, are running at reduced capacity this week due to planned maintenance work, a company source said on Friday.

The work began at the start of the week, and the plant was expected to be functioning normally again this weekend, the source added.

INEOS is Europe’s largest producer of synthetic ethanol. Its two units at Grangemouth have a total nameplate capacity of around 310,000 tonnes/year, according to the ICIS Plants and Projects database.

Synthetic ethanol is made by the hydration of ethylene, and competes with ethanol produced by the fermentation process. 

The European industrial ethanol market was long this week due to continued soft demand from sectors such as paints and packaging, market sources said on Friday.
