Qatar’s Ras Laffan 3 starts production at big LNG train

TORONTO (ICIS news)--Qatar’s Ras Laffan 3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) joint venture has started up its 7.8m tonne/year Train 6, stakeholder ExxonMobil said on Wednesday.

Ras Laffan 3, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum (70%) and ExxonMobil (30%), was also constructing a second 7.8m tonne/year train, Train 7, with expected start-up in late 2009, the US energy major added.

Both Trains 6 and 7 would be supplied with natural gas from Qatar's giant North Field, which is estimated to contain in excess of 900,000bn cubic feet of natural gas, the company said.

Qatar ranks as the world's largest LNG supplier.

In related news, Canadian firm Kitimat LNG said this week it was planning an LNG export project in Canada’s western British Columbia province.
