US phosphate exports jump 14% on sales to India

LONDON (ICIS news)--US exports of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer rose 14% in July compared to 2008 to reach 555,481 short tons, with India accounting for 65% of the total, data from US-based The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) revealed on Tuesday. 

India received 360,637 short tons as US exporters shipped against contract business, according to the data. This was followed by Pakistan with 46,287 short tons (8%). Vietnam and Brazil each imported around 29,000 tonnes each (5%).

The vast majority of the remaining tonnage was shipped to Latin America, including Chile and Peru.

US monammonium phosphate (MAP) exports reached 137,436 short tons, down 3% on the same month of 2008. The majority was shipped to Brazil, which took 73,115 short tons (53%), followed by Argentina which received another 26,392 short tons (19%).

Canada, Mexico, Chile and Uruguay took the remaining tonnes according to TFI.

Major US phosphate producers include Mosaic, Mississippi Phosphates and Agrifos.
