Clariant to shut Gendorf EO/MEG for 10 days in September

LONDON (ICIS news)--Clariant will partially close its ethylene oxide (EO) plant and take its monoethylene glycol (MEG) plant off line in Gendorf, Germany, for 10 days of maintenance during the second half of September, a company source said on Friday.

“We have bridged to fulfil our contract obligations,” the source said.

The MEG market was tight in Europe, because output had been curtailed due to poor economics and imports were lacking, according to industry players.

EO demand was holding up reasonably well in northwest Europe and particularly in the surfactants sector. However, activity remained subdued for industrial and technical applications amid the softer economic climate and in southern Europe due to the summer holiday period.

Clariant had been operating between technical minimum and flat out because of changing demand, with EO being healthier than MEG, the source said.

The MEG nameplate capacity at Gendorf is 240,000 tonnes/year, while the EO capacity is 225,000 tonnes/year, according to ICIS plants and projects.
