TORONTO (ICIS news)--Gerresheimer is opening a new research centre in the US and a new production facility in Spain this week as it seeks to expand its pharmaceuticals plastics packaging business, the Germany-based company said on Tuesday.

The US centre, located at its manufacturing site in Peachtree City, Georgia, would strengthen Gerresheimer’s role as a full service provider for medical plastic systems in the US market, the company said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the new plant in Masalavés, Spain, would target the broad market of standardised pharmaceutical system packaging made from plastics, it said.

Chief executive Axel Herberg said Gerresheimer’s pharmaceutical plastic business had highest growth rate of any division in the company.

Burkhard Lingenberg, spokesman for the Dusseldorf-based producer, told ICIS news his firm would not disclose financial terms or how many jobs would be created in the wake of the investment.

However, he said that his company had invested €90m ($132m) last year, on sales just over €1bn ($1.48bn).

Gerresheimer, a provider of specialty products made of plastics and glass for the pharmaceuticals and life science industries, employs 10,000 people at 40 locations worldwide.
