LONDON (ICIS news)--LyondellBasell’s petrochemical site at Fos-sur-mer in southern France went into its regular five-year major maintenance shutdown on 19 September a spokesman for the company confirmed on Friday.

LyondellBasell makes methyl and ethyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE/ETBE), propylene oxide (PO) and propylene glycol (PG) at the site.

“It [the site] will be closed down for eight weeks, and between the shutdown and restart we will have 800 contractors from 90 different companies on site,” the spokesman said.

“The aim is to completely inspect the interior of all equipment to ensure its condition is perfect for the next cycle, in addition to continuous external monitoring.”

The planning for this operation has been ongoing for the past two years.

The spokesman was unable to give any indication as to the effects on the market or the products affected, however, a second source said that they were well prepared and did not expect any shortness in the market as a result of the shutdowns.
