HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Mexico’s Pemex reduced the prices of some of its polyethylene (PE) grades, Pemex sources said on Wednesday.

The steepest reduction by Mexico’s sole PE producer was for high density PE (HDPE) injection with a 6.0% drop, while linear low density PE (LLDPE) prices for rotomoulding applications were reduced by 4.5%. The cuts were made effective on Tuesday,

Pemex did not provide the prices for the products and global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing does not assess Mexico prices for those particular grades.

The adjustment was made make Pemex prices competitive with imports from the US, the source said.

Mexico’s PE demand had weakened in September. The local producer was hoping that a price reduction would help spur domestic demand.

The prices of low density PE (LDPE) and those of other HDPE grades like blow moulding were unchanged.

Further price adjustments in October were possible, the source said.
