HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US biodiesel major GreenHunter Energy hired former investment banker Jonathan Hoopes as president and chief operating officer, the company said on Friday.

Hoopes spent the past 15 years analysing the energy and information technology sectors in the investment banking industry, most recently as a managing director at ThinkEquity Partners in San Francisco. He also spent time at Deutsche Bank and UBS, the company said.

GreenHunter, based in Grapevine, Texas, is working with Imperial Capital investment bank to devise a strategy for its 105m gal/year biodiesel refinery in Houston, the country’s largest. The company closed the plant in April as the market for biodiesel soured and its cash flow evaporated. It is now seeking to either sell the refinery or find an investment partner to inject new cash into it.

“Hoopes is someone with the analytical and financial wherewithal to effectively lead GreenHunter in tapping capital markets and continue our growth strategy,” GreenHunter spokesman Jack Zedlitz said.  “Our growth plan will require capital, and he knows where it’s at.”
