SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Iran’s Morvarid Petrochemical, a subsidiary of state-owned National Petrochemical Co, is expected to start up a 500,000 tonne/year gas cracker at Assaluyeh in November-December this year, a source close to the company said on Wednesday.

The cracker, also known as Olefins No 5, was likely to operate at only around 50% of its capacity in the initial stage due to limited gas feedstock from the South Pars gas field, the source said.

The South Pars is the largest gas field in the world, shared between Iran and Qatar.

Ethylene from Morvarid would be supplied to Arvand Petrochemical Co’s chlor-alkali complex at Bandar Imam, which was scheduled to start up in December or January next year, the source added.

The Arvand complex includes a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plant, a vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) unit and an ethylene dichloride (EDC) facility, with capacities of 340,000 tonnes/year each. A 635,000 tonne/year caustic soda line is also part of the project.
