TORONTO (ICIS news)--Sigma-Aldrich posted a 5.1% increase in third-quarter net income, to $86.1m (€56.8m) from $81.9m a year earlier, on underlying year-over-year organic sales growth of 2.3%, the US-based fine chemicals firm said on Thursday.
Chief executive Jai Nagarkatti said the improved organic sales performance was achieved amid continued challenging economic conditions.
However, Sigma-Aldrich’s reported sales, which include a 3.6% unfavourable currency impact, were down 1.3% to $534m, from $541m in the 2008 third quarter.
Gross profit for the three months ended 30 September was $265.2m, down 4.5% from $277.9m in the 2008 third quarter, while operating income fell 3.3% to $122.0m, from $126.2m in the year-earlier period.
