Shell completes Singapore ethylene jetty and cryogenic terminal

LONDON (ICIS news)--Shell has completed the construction of a new ethylene jetty and received its first shipment of ethylene at its Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex (SEPC) project in Singapore, the Anglo-Dutch petrochemical giant said on Monday.

“The commissioning of the new terminal and the arrival of the first shipment of ethylene is yet another significant milestone that we have crossed right on schedule. We are happy that the SEPC project is on track for completion in early 2010,” said Simon Lam, venture director for SEPC.

Lam added that completion of the terminal and the arrival of this first shipment of ethylene was a major step in transforming the Pulau Bukom refinery into an integrated oil and petrochemical complex.

The jetty links Pulau Bukom to the a 750,000 tonnes/year mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) plant on Jurong Island that is currently being started up, via the refrigerated storage and undersea pipelines, Shell said in a statement.

The jetty, which is designed to load and discharge refrigerated ethylene to and from ethylene carriers, will additionally allow Shell to export surplus ethylene to customers in the region when the 800,000 tonnes/year ethylene cracker complex (ECC) on Pulau Bukom is completed next year.
