MEXICO CITY (ICIS news)--LyondellBasell is looking to expand vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) sales in Brazil, a company executive said on Sunday.

LyondellBasell vice president of sales and supply chain Dale Young said the company sees an opportunity in Brazil because the “only other VAM producer in Brazil has cut back” production. He did not identify the producer.

In July, Brazil was one of the top four destinations for VAM produced in the US.

Young said South American market participants seem to be somewhat more relaxed regarding the current economic recession than others elsewhere.

Latin American players say “look, we go through a financial crisis about every year”, Young said.

He spoke on the sidelines of the 29th Latin American Petrochemical Association (APLA) annual meeting, which continues through Tuesday.

Young added that the general mood of the conference was “drastically improved” from last year’s event.
