APLA ’09: Mexico energy secretary praises new petchem projects

MEXICO CITY (ICIS news)--Mexico Secretary of Energy Georgina Kessel on Sunday cited the Ethylene XXI project and the collaboration between Pemex and Brazil’s Unigel as examples of how Mexico was working to improve the chemical industry’s competitive position.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 29th Latin American Petrochemical Annual Meeting, Kessel said the government was aiming to increase investment in the petrochemicals sector.

She cited the partnership of Brazil’s Braskem and Mexico’s Idesa in the 1m tonne/year Ethylene XXI project, and the collaboration of Mexico’s Pemex and Unigel on their acrylonitrile (ACN) plant in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico.

Kessel also said that last year’s energy reforms were aimed at improving the performance of state-run oil giant Pemex, and that plans for a new $10bn (€7bn) refinery complex at Tula were in the works.

The conference, which continues through Tuesday, had 616 registered attendees representing 229 corporations, said APLA president Arthur Whitaker - chief executive of Brazilian chemical producer Unipar.
