EU launches pollutant release and transfer register

BRUSSELS (ICIS news)--The European Commission and the European Environment Agency (EEA) launched on Monday a new European pollutant release and transfer register with information on emissions of pollutants from industrial facilities throughout Europe.

The so-called E-PRTR includes annual data for 91 substances and covers more than 24,000 facilities in 65 economic activities including the chemical industry.

It also provides information on the amount and types of waste transferred from facilities to waste handlers both inside and outside each country.

EU environment commissioner Stavros Dimas said the register demonstrated “a genuine commitment by the public authorities and industry to share information with citizens and increase openness”.
