HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) exports totaled 193,402 tonnes in September, up 103% from 95,369 tonnes a year earlier, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Friday.
The vast year-over-year difference was largely due to shutdowns of US Gulf coast-based MTBE plants that were battered in the path of Hurricane Ike, which struck in mid-September 2008.
Year-to-date 2009 exports were 1.663m tonnes, down from 1.400m tonnes in 2008.
August exports stood at 226,571 tonnes.
The top three destinations in September for the gasoline additive were Mexico, Venezuela and France.
US MTBE producers include Huntsman and LyondellBasell.
