SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical is on track to scrap its Mizushima-based 100,000 tonne/year paraxylene (PX) facility in May 2010, a company source said on Thursday.

“There is no competitiveness in that plant,” the source said.

Mitsubishi Chemical had announced in February that it plans to scrap two of its Japan-based petrochemical plants as it restructures its purified terephthalic acid (PTA) business.

In addition to scrapping its PX facility in May 2010, Mitsubishi Chemical would also close a 250,000 tonne/year PTA facility in Matsuyama by December 2010, the source added.
