Canada Enerkem to receive $50m for US ethanol project

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Canadian biofuels maker Enerkem will receive $50m (€34m) from the US Department of Energy (DOE) for the construction of a second-generation ethanol plant in Pontotoc, Mississippi, the company said on Monday.

The 20m gal/year (75m litre/year) facility will use municipal solid waste, wood residues, construction debris and treated wood to produce ethanol and other chemicals, Enerkem said.

Funding for the project was part of a larger grant announced by the DOE on Friday, which included some $564m in funds to help finance 19 biorefinery projects in 15 states.

The DOE listed Enerkem as also receiving some $90m in non-federal funding.

Enerkem earlier this year said the total investment in the project was estimated at $250m with construction expected to begin in 2010.
