GPCA ‘09: China’s Ningbo PO/SM project to start up in Q2 2010

DUBAI (ICIS news)--The world’s largest propylene oxide/styrene monomer (PO/SM) project at Ningbo, Zhejiang province in China, is expected to start up in the second quarter of 2010, a senior official at one of the project’s joint venture partners LyondellBasell said on Wednesday.

“The progress on the Ningbo project is an illustration of LyondellBasell’s strategy of growing outside our traditional regions, by leveraging our technology to gain access to key markets and to competitive feedstocks and by getting into joint venture relationships with strong local partners,” said Just Jansz, president of the firm's technology business.

The project, a joint venture between Sinopec subsidiary, Zhenhai Refining and Chemical Co (ZRCC) and LyondellBasell, will  produce 285,000 tonnes/year of PO and 620,000 tonnes/year of SM.

Using LyondellBasell’s PO technology, it will be the US major’s first petrochemical production facility in China.

Jansz was speaking to ICIS news on the sidelines of the 4th Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) forum, which ends on Thursday.
